These Voxi SIM Only Deals Now Start From £5 A Month With An Exclusive Code - Ars Technica

These Voxi SIM only deals now start from £5 a month with an exclusive code

Works In Progress

A few shots of some of the things on the paint table right now. The giant mammoth man is from the Reaper Bones IV Kickstarter. The Van Saar gangers are from the boxed set by GW. The Pathfinder Goblin pyromaniacs are also Reaper Bones but not from the Kickstarter.

Barely started...

Still a good ways from finished.
Not really happy with the wash I chose so I am going to go back and redo that bit.
Plan to do the tusks last.

Closeup. Going for a black bodystocking with light gray armoured plates.
Energetic items are blue-green (eye lenses, power sources, high tech pony tails, etc.)
Some metals will be bronze, most weapons will be matte black.

Working on these not-really-all-that-little guys I realize how bad my eyes are getting.
A bit sad about that. Oh well, that's why I have a magnifier visor I guess.

Weekend Gaming Update 4/22/2019

Friday night watched a great episode of Dragons and Things on Twitch while I painted minis. I don't think I have mentioned Dragons and Things here, which is a shame. It's a live play stream of a bunch of crazy people playing Pathfinder. It's a lot of fun, and they interact a lot with the viewers, which is what drew me to it so much in the first place. Anyway, from 6:00-10:00 Pacific that's what I am usually doing (which is 8 to midnight for me).

Played a game of Infinity with my buddy Zach and his son. Went to a local-ish game store to play, Montag's Games. I ought to do a Store Report on them, but I may have already. They've just moved into a new space, though, so it may be time for an update.

I finished the following minis over the weekend:

Reaper Bones Mechanical Monkeys
These are destined to serve Otto Maton if he ever reappears...

Reaper Bones village woman with her rugrats.

 Frostgrave Soldiers (Archer and Infantryman)
These are painted for the witch, specifically, but could be used for anyone really

More Frostgrave Soldiers (Tracker and Man-at-Arms)
More Frostgrave terrain

Closer up

So, knocking a few things out. Which is good, considering what's on the way soon...

Types Of Projects

When I started writing articles on my site, sometimes I had great results, like writing the hexagonal grid guide in 6 weeks, and sometimes I had terrible results, like writing article about curved roads in 5 months. I eventually realized that the difference was that with hexagons, I understood the topic well, but with curved paths, I spent most of the time trying to understand the topic. To make matters worse, because I had a high standard for my articles, I spent too much time trying to polish the article about curved paths, even before I understood it well.

Back in 2013 I decided to create a separate directory /x/YYWW-name/ where I'd put the lower effort and experimental pages, numbered by year and week. For example, 1942-isometric means year 2019, week 42. Over the last few years I've realized I do two different types of projects:

  • fixed scope, variable time, usually focused on explaining something
  • variable scope, fixed time, usually focused on learning or understanding something

The fixed time articles typically go into /x/. An unexpected benefit of these short unpolished experiments is that sometimes it lets me explore a set of topics that comes together into a larger polished project. The best example of this is my map generation work in 2017–2018. Back in 2017 I had started experimenting with map generation topics:

This structure let me try things quickly, and also abandon things quickly. Those of you who know garbage collection algorithms know that there are two general strategies: throw away the garbage, or keep the non-garbage. In my regular projects I follow the "throw away garbage" strategy, but in this experimental folder I follow the "keep non-garbage" strategy. Things that work I can copy into a new project. Things that fail I leave alone. When I wanted to produce mapgen4 in 2018, I went back through these small projects and picked the parts I could use, and turned that into a new big project.

People ask me if I share links to all the /x/ pages. I don't do this because I found that by not sharing at first, it increases how much I write. I don't start every page worrying about how to explain something, or cross-browser compatibility, or making things work on any machine other than my own. If something works out, I can then fix it up and share it. Many things don't work out, and then I can abandon them quickly. This strategy has been extraordinarily successful at getting me to write more. I started these in 2013, with 7 pages, and then 11 in 2014, 20 in 2015, 24 in 2016, 33 in 2017, 36 in 2018, and 27 in 2019 so far. The downside is that it's so much easier to write the /x/ pages that I am not making many of the regular pages. I'm annoyed with myself for that but I'm just going to have to accept it for now.

Italian Wars Project : "Light Cavalry"

Having run out of fancy Dan Gendarme in all their feathers and livery it's time to go "smart but casual" with these chaps, 6 figures from the 28mm Perry Miniatures plastic Light Cavalry box set.

I think this box set is turning into one of the most versatile avaliable, not only have I used it for these lance armed troops but you get the sword armed chap for an officer and there is a musician arm in there as well. The box is also my "go to" for Standard Bearers and that's before you add in the Crossbow (next unit) and Bow options. I don't know how they got so much on each sprue.

I'm sure you will all know the score on the painting by now, oil wipe method horses (this is the last six of the batch of 80 plus horses I painted back in December), riders done in acrylic paint (mostly Vallejo) with the odd subtle wash and a Pete's Flag stuck on a pole and hoisted above said unit for effect.

This will be half of a 12 man unit however I plan for these to be multi-functional in my army. They can be used as a Light Cavalry unit on its own or they can be split up and mixed with the Gendarme to increase their unit size, maybe 6 Gendarme in the front rank with 6 of these behind? It's a work in progress.

The traditional 3 man "Lance" consisted of the main man (the Gendarme), the lesser armed Squire (these guys) and a non-combatant or general dogsbody back at camp to polish the armour and make the tea.

The big drive on the Italian Wars Project has come as a result of the Annual Analogue Hobbies Winter Paint Challenge which is nearing it's end (20th March) so I will do a Troops on Parade feature on the Army at that stage. Next up will be some Mounted Crossbow from the same box set along with another 6 lance armed figures to up this unit to 12.
